EFPIA: 2D barcode anti-counterfeit pilot a success

The EFPIA has hailed its 2-D data matrix anti-counterfeiting pilot scheme as a success and hopes to convince governments and supply chain actors of benefits of the approach.

The EFPIA project, launched last year in Sweden in collaboration with Siemens and Apoteket, applied 2D barcodes to 112,416 drug packs at 25 dispensing pharmacies across the capital Stockholm.

The results demonstrate that the system met its performance, availability and response times with the vast majority of scans were verified in less than two seconds.

The data also show that the exceptions, unexpected events that could indicate the detection of a counterfeit product, worked effectively and was able to group occurrences into likelihood groups for further analysis.

AstraZeneca CEO and EFPIA board member David Brennan said that: “This pilot has demonstrated that the proposed EFPIA model could offer a proportionate and cost-effective means to improve the security of medicines.”

Cheaper than RFID

Association spokesman Colin Mackay told in-Pharmatechnologist more about the cost of a wider adoption the approach, explaining it “would be considerably cheaper than full track-and-trace such as an RFID based system.”

Mackay said that for the hypothetical 'average ' pharmaceutical company the system would require €30m ($40.5m) in capital investment and a further €4m per year for operations.

For national databases, Mackay continued, the estimated investment is around €30m for capital expenditure to set up the technology and €45m a year in total operating expenses.

For the industry, we are certain that a system which is robust, effective and affordable is much more likely to be taken up than a high-end, gold-plated solution.”

Unified, cross border approach

Mackay went to explain that, now the 2D barcode approach has been shown to work, the next step is to use the findings persuade governments and supply chain actors that this is a valid approach to anti-counterfeiting.

Even if the technology works perfectly, it will be relatively ineffective if systems are not interoperable across borders, so that packs which move between countries are still checked at point of dispensing.

So our wish would be to see agreement on interoperability as a starting point for the uptake of such a system, not myriad different national systems.”

He added that while there is no timeline for adoption of this or any other system, the problems of fake drugs in Europe is growing and “needs to be addressed, therefore we would like to see some system up and running as quickly as possible.”

Preventing Inventory Losses with Zebra Barcode Label Printers ...

When running a large company, it is essential that efficiency is optimized. One of the keys to maintaining this efficiency is to have an easy, automated way to keep track of inventory. This is especially important to large businesses as there is so much merchandise or supplies involved that losses can be great if care is not taken to keep close track of them. By using a simple system provided by Zebra Barcode Label Printers, the company can streamline its inventory tracking and save money and time.

One facet to staying organized is having a stationary printer. For example, with Zebra Thermal Desktop Printers employees can quickly print labels and receipts to keep track on the spot. The thermal system of printers also reduces the amount of printer ink that needs to be purchased as the paper changes color due to a chemical heat reaction that takes place within the special paper; the added advantage here is the reduced need for ink cartridge alignment or delays in progress due to empty cartridges.

Another component to an efficient system is having a way to create inventory labels on the go. Models such as the Zebra Mobile Label Printers, allow this by providing a handheld, cordless device that can quickly print labels on the spot. This can be excellent to use in large warehouses or storage areas, as traveling about the building can waste precious time on the clock. By shopping around online to find a good deal on such printers, you will also be saving your business much money by preventing inventory losses.

New Release.. New Features… Better Barcode Reading « bardecode

The last couple of weeks have been busy ones here at Softek Software. As driving rain and windy conditions try to dampen the office bike rides new versions and better barcode reading have been slowly emerging. As the result of feedback from customers and innovative approaches we are pleased to announce several improvements to both the SDK and the ready to use application (BardecodeFiler).

Firstly BardecodeFiler, which requires no development (simply download and use!) has seen a very useful new feature added. No Longer can it only be run in an automated fashion though Windows Scheduler but it now has its own timer. Hopefully this will allow for a greater user experience and better efficiency; why make things more complicated than they need to be? This can allow a company to run regular (e.g. every 15 minutes) scans of the input folder to ensure a quick flow of information through the office.

New Timer Feature

Secondly we are very pleased to announce new and improved Data Matrix Barcode reading. For more information on these 2D barcodes see my post from last week. Although these were read at a very high rate before we feel that this new version exceeds all expectations. Don’t believe us? Check it out for yourself! It can be downloaded for free from our website and you can get a free 30 day evaluation license by dropping us an email.

So if you are an existing customer then we recommend trying out the latest version to see how it can help you. And if you are currently considering the adoption of barcode technology then check out our software, it could just be the difference your company is looking for!

Types of thermal barcode printers. | Mike Gouchie

Thermal barcode printers are one of the most popular forms of thermal label products. There are various types of barcode printers available in the market serving the printing requirements of various industries. These include thermal label desktop printers, industrial barcode printers, mid-range printers, and portable thermal barcode printers. All these thermal label printers are known to provide the best quality barcode images. They use either direct thermal label technology or thermal transfer label technology. Some of them, however, are compatible with both the technologies.

Barcode printers using direct thermal label technology are more cost effective, as these printers use heat activated papers to create the barcodes. The heated print head of direct thermal label printers creates the barcode image directly on the label material. They don’t need any ink, toner or carbon ribbons to create the labels. However, the choice of label materials is limited with direct thermal label printers. They only work with specially treated, thermal papers and films. Also, direct thermal labels are likely to get faded or darken over time, especially if exposed to heat, sunlight or harsh chemicals.

In contrast, thermal transfer labels are immune to harsh environment and heat. Barcode printers using thermal transfer label technology use a chemically treated, heat-sensitive ribbon. The heated print head of the thermal transfer label printer melts the ink and transfer it onto the substrate to create the barcode image; thus, named “thermal transfer” labels. This technology provides a wide range of choice to users when it comes to label materials, including papers, plastics, films, and polyesters.

Thus, the users need to consider their printing requirements while deciding which thermal label technology to opt for their barcode printers. Another factor that should be considered while determining the thermal label printer is the amount of barcode labels the user needs to print on regular basis.  Depending on these factors, the users can select one of the following thermal label printers to create high-quality barcodes:

Desktop Thermal Label Printers: These thermal label printers are ideal for printing light-to-medium printing requirements. People with limited space and budget too can opt for these barcode printers. Due to their compact design, these printers fit perfectly on a countertop, desk or POS station. However, the printing limitation of these printers is less than 100 labels in a day. They are ideal to create paper labels and tags as well as vinyl jewelry labels.

Mid-Range Printers: They are well suited for well suited for light industrial printing. You can create very small serial barcode labels as well as large chemical drum barcode labels with these thermal label printers. These printers can work with basic papers and synthetic barcode labels. Labels created by these barcode printers are durable and can withstand extreme climatic conditions. You can create around 1000 barcode labels per day with a mid-range printer.

Industrial Printers: They are ideal for warehouse locations as well as for manufacturing industry. These thermal labels can create hundreds and thousands of labels and can work round-the-clock. They offer impeccable reliability and durability and can create large to very small label sizes.

Portable Printers: Finally, the portable barcode labels are ideal to meet on location printing requirements. Since these thermal label printers come with stand-alone features, you can use them virtually anywhere. They work with Bluetooth technology with a printing width ranging from 2-4 inches.

Each thermal label printer has specific advantages and limitation. Thus, assess your printing requirements before making the final purchasing decision.
