A Japanese company is developing a scanner that can read items without barcodes, invisible tags or embedded watermark technology. Using a camera, the Object Recognition Scanner can recognize items based on colours and patterns, and can even differentiate between two types of apples. For cashiers and consumers alike not having to scan barcodes or remember ID numbers should greatly improve the checkout process.
